House Bill 1697 Cannot Become the Law of Hawaii.

Much concern has been made in Florida and other states about using schools to act as proponents for all issues related to sex and gender education.
A new law, passed by a conservative legislature and Governor in Florida, merely says it’s not the mission of schools to teach political sex and gender issues to students in grades K-3. Just imagine: Florida had to produce a law that codifies what most of us see as common sense. But, we as parents and leaders simply must apply common sense.
Now the far left here in Hawai’i, with House Bill 1697, wants to get around direct classroom instruction by indoctrinating teachers. Liberals’ pre-COVID approach of fundamentally affecting curriculum and schoolbooks is undoubtedly being exposed. Parents were horrified to see the indoctrination that had been ongoing as their students were viewing their computers at home during COVID. All through the nation, parents are having their voices heard.
Liberal politicians are switching to background deals to fully plant their ideas into the heads of our teachers, thus avoiding having to put their schemes in a place for all to see.
With this end-run on what goes into classroom instruction, they can then say that there’s nothing in the curriculum that requires indoctrination of students, even when it’s obvious.
This Bill creates an environment where teachers see their role to include sex-related subjects as even more insidious than straight-forward introduction of such topics in officially sanctioned materials. Teachers will be expected to inject sex-related topics into their daily plans, conversations with students, and in school events.
The Bill now being considered calls for teachers to receive “comprehensive training for teachers and educational officers on sexual health topics that include positive and accurate representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual, other sexual orientations and gender identities, persons of color, and disability communities to destigmatize and promote sexual health…” among other requirements. Some in the legislature will undoubtedly say this is merely an adjustment to ongoing sex and gender instruction.
Now is the time to ask why there is a need for schools to be focused on sex and gender issues at all. Math, Science, English, History, and Economics are enough for students to focus on. Parents should not have to worry about our students having their heads filled with editorializing by teachers while in fact our students are essentially captive audiences.
I will ensure this Bill, and other rules or regulations alike will not pass on my watch. Our children’s future is at stake.
