What’s the big deal about “Meet and Greets?”

This past weekend in Kihei, Maui, a “Meet and Greet” event was held at a local business where the owner has been vigilant in keeping his doors open throughout the pandemic lockdowns and restrictions. Gary entered into a room of shared passion for the future of Hawai’i. It seemed more than fitting to sit together to discuss the very real and diverse issues that we, as business owners, teachers, and families, etc. face in light of the last two years under tight control of our current Mayor and Governor, not to mention the several years under a state-government-trifecta, Hawai’i’s “one political party grip on the governorship, a majority in the state senate, and a majority in the state house.”

It was obvious to everyone in the room that Gary demonstrated a strong awareness of government workings, current issues, the barriers we face for enacting real change, and the role the governor plays in various departments in our state. He communicated a clear vision for his governorship, including transparency in his leadership, limiting the power of the governor, and creating structures that keep government officials accountable to the people and to standards of ethics.
The shift of the day from speaking formally to “Q&A” can be recounted with highest value and sincerest honesty. The attendees had the imperative opportunity to share the things close to their hearts such as water and land use and management, education opportunities and challenges for the children of Hawai’i (and children of outer islands in particular), government corruption, and how to help the people of Hawai’i recover and move forward after the past two years. Gary seemed to listen carefully with patience and responded in a manner that was refreshingly direct and honest. He got to the heart of their concerns; there was no mistaking his commitment to representing what matters most- the people.
I read on his website that Gary is called “A servant leader.” It wasn’t until the event came to a close that I understood what this meant. Gary dove in to help to fold chairs, clean up the room, and take out the trash. I took note of the humility he demonstrated. True character is shown in the little things. Gary is not above any job, and I think that says a lot about who he is and the type of leader he will be.

So, what’s the big deal about “Meet and Greets?”

The big deal is Gary Cordery is the real deal!

Speaking to him face to face, asking him hard questions, hearing his common-sense answers, understanding his words (which all pointed back to the prosperity of the people), getting a feel for who he is and what he cares for, experiencing the authenticity in his eyes…all of it. I highly encourage ANYONE to reach out and host a “Meet and Greet.” The value Gary Cordery offers his community, large and small, will only continue to grow!
